Making a Brighter Place

Art of Kindness started as my dream.
We built it together.

I take such solace and pride in Art of Kindness these days. I hope you do too. These are dark and uncertain times for Australians. Covid, floods and the horror of war breaking out in the Ukraine - we're all battling anxiety and fatigue as we try to carry on.

When I start to despair, I remind myself that we are doing what we can. AoK has become a safe, caring and generous community of art-lovers, all banding together to lift each other up and share their gifts to make a positive difference.

We can't control everything, but we can do this. Thank you all for helping make the world a brighter place.

This is me

Hi I’m Megan. You may not know me yet, and that's my bad. As creator of the Art of Kindness, I know I should be out there and visible as the face of our movement. But, oh gosh, I'm pretty introverted and a bit shy - it's more my style to stay tucked away behind the scenes with my paintbrush, or busily working away on building our gallery and community.

Not a selfie person, if you know what I mean lol

Me - with my piece called 'Humanity'

But it's time to stretch out of my comfort zone a bit, because I actually have SO MUCH TO SAY!  I promise I'll do better, because I really care about connecting with you. You might even start to see the odd video from me on Facebook and Instagram, just checking in to say hi.

I'll start by sharing my Art of Kindness journey, and where we're heading next:

Where we began

Art of Kindness was born out of my yearning to express myself creatively, make a difference in the world, and forge meaningful connections with others who yearn for the same things.

I had this crazy idea to create an online gallery where generous artists could come together to contribute their original work in support of a chosen Charity Partner, and where art lovers could share the joy of supporting a local artist and a worthy cause at the same time.

For some reason this vision made my heart sing… I couldn’t let it go.

So, even though I already had a busy full time design business to run, a family and a farm to care for, and no budget to speak of, I put my head down and started the huge task of figuring out how to make it happen. Here are my journal notes from early 2020, when the Art of Kindness idea first came to me.

Totally illegible lol! But you can see the excitement in my rush of scribbled ideas.
These pages are the very beginning of AoK.
"Artists - don't let the darkness in the world snuff out your spark. AoK is calling you to action – the world needs you to shine the light of your unique creative voice."

It's been a vertical learning curve and a helluvalot of work to build a meaningful gallery from the ground up, and it all takes time. The entire process was, and continues to be, an unpaid labour of love. We're still in our infancy as a gallery and change-movement, but I’m just so grateful you all resonated with what AoK is about.

After just one year from launch, our gallery is now bursting with gorgeous art by fabulously talented Aussies of all ages and our caring community is growing all the time. We're doing it! Artists, buyers, volunteers and Charity Partners: together we’re changing lives.

Getting traction

Christmas was a riot of action for Art of Kindness, with more new artists, new listings, art sales and donations to charity in October-December than AoK saw during the rest of the year combined!

So far, our potential for growth has been limited only by my time, energy and resources, and I've been stretched to capacity! So it was a massive leap forward when volunteers started to join the admin team to give me a hand behind the scenes.

Huge shout-out to Adriana Tom, Karen Boje and Kristie Hunter – thank you from the bottom of my heart for volunteering your precious time, ideas and skills. From brainstorming sessions to social media posting and reaching out to new artists, you’ve all saved my sanity and helped AoK thrive over the past six months!

If the idea of volunteering a few hours to help Art of Kindness evolve and expand lights you up, shoot me an email - I'd love to chat with you! megan@artofkindness.com.au

The next chapter

A crazy December was followed by a blessedly quiet January, which gave us a chance to catch our breath. It was also a time of dreaming and scheming about the year ahead. Out of this has come a flurry of exciting new projects and a surge forward into a whole new chapter for our gallery.

Recently launched creative collaborations like The Kindy Project and The Heart Project (getting a wonderful response from artists already), and a planned line of premium AoK merch (watch this space!) are just a few of the initiatives keeping Art of Kindness vibrant and alive.

AoK e-news first edition

With all this excitement afoot, I have SO MUCH TO TELL YOU! We realised an AoK e-news was the next logical step to keep our artists, buyers and supporters in the loop and share all the great stuff that’s happening behind the scenes.

We're incredibly lucky that Robyn Simon from Digital Business Solutions has generously offered her time and expertise to help us navigate the uncharted territory of digi communications. Thank you Robyn!

Here's a sneak peak at a few headline stories from the first e-news. Sign up to our community mailing list by emailing me at megan@artofkindness.com.au

I believe AoK has limitless potential. Can't wait to see how 2022 unfolds for us all, and I look forward to connecting with you again soon!

Big Love, Megan
